If
you were in Mendocino in the 1970s, you probably remember Colonel
Wingnuts. The collected essays are now published for the first time in
book form.
The cultural waves that swept over Mendocino during
that time generated significant upheaval. The flood of liberal urban
newcomers splashed up against the conservative country folks already
here. Written while treading water in this flood, the essays in Collected Columns were author Walt McKeown's attempt to throw some light on parts of the surge.
Walt
McKeown has been a weatherman and science journalist for Mendocino
County on radio, TV and in print since the 1970s. His series
Weatherwords was featured on NPR, and he has worked in atmospheres and
oceans for the Naval Research Laboratory, the Atlantic Fleet, and the
intelligence community.
